Philippines Adventure: Cebu and an Unforgettable Whale Shark Encounter

From Singapore, I flew via Manila to Cebu – my very first time in the Philippines. No big plan, just one goal: Oslob, at the southern tip of the island.

After a short night on Cebu, a guide picked me up early in the morning with his van. Three and a half hours across the island, past rice fields and small villages, until the road eventually ends right at the sea. In Oslob, what most people come here for is waiting: swimming with whale sharks.

In a bangka – a traditional outrigger boat – we headed out onto the water. And then there they were. Right below us, right beside us. Whale sharks. Several of them. So large that for a moment your brain doesn’t process what your eyes are seeing.

Jumping in takes nerve. You’re standing on the boat, looking down at a fish easily six meters long, and your head says: maybe not. But whale sharks feed exclusively on plankton – you’re of no interest to them. Once you’ve truly understood that, the calm sets in. And then you’re swimming next to the largest fish on the planet and everything else fades away.

What surprised me most was the skin. I’d always assumed fish feel smooth and slippery. When one of the whale sharks brushed past me, it felt more like coarse sandpaper. One of those small details you never forget, because it challenges everything you thought you knew.
