Journey Begins: Memmingen to Dubrovnik, Bosnia & Herzegovina to Montenegro

Our trip started with a flight from Memmingen to Dubrovnik – straight from southern Germany to the Croatian Adriatic coast.

In Dubrovnik, we picked up our rental car and left the coastline behind. Crossing into Bosnia and Herzegovina at Ivanica, we drove deep into the open landscapes of Herzegovina: through Ljubinje, across the plateau near Bunja, until the silhouette of Mostar appeared before us – stone, river, and history packed into the tightest of spaces.

From Mostar, we continued south, crossing into Montenegro at Zupci. And then came the moment every Balkan road trip builds towards: the coastal road along the Bay of Kotor. From Podi through Risan, past Orahovac, water on one side and mountains on the other – until Kotor emerged ahead of us like a stage set.

For the return to Dubrovnik airport, we took the route along the coast through Herceg Novi and crossed back into Croatia at Karasovići – one last look at the Adriatic before heading home.
